I mentioned briefly how some of my old friends ended up going to university after years of working in low paying jobs. I must emphasise at this point that university is not always the best way to get into the profession of your dream. There are apprenticeships and in some professions, you can learn and train on the jobs. For example, you can study on your own to be an accountant studying CIMA or ACCA whilst working for an Accounting firm. My point is there are other ways of gaining formal education rather than just going to college or university. I did my Masters in Accounting and Finance Degree through Direct Learning online. It meant I could work at the same time. There are now many Online Companies for learning anything you want to learn like Udemy. I learned how to sell on Ebay and Amazon through courses on Udemy. Through that I learnt a lot about discipline and time management. This will be discussed on another section. Do not just think of formal education, there are many other channels to use. It is also important to note that local colleges are very cheap and offer flexible times. I learned basic Spanish at a local college. I think it was like £120 for an 18 week course in a small class, A friend of mine learnt interior design before he renovated his house for very little. To summarise, the UK offers a diverse way of getting some education. Take advantage of them and improve your life. It is also a way of meeting people with similar interests as yours.
- If planning to do a long course, then do your research on salary, opportunities and requirements before applying as the job market in the UK is most likely different from where you come from
- If applying to university investigate the ranking of the university as this affects your chances of getting a good job after graduating
- Consider whether you will need to relocate to study or the travelling time to and from the college/university
- Can you afford the travelling costs and how does it fit with your job, if employed?
- If you are from outside the EU then consider looking at the list of skills and professions current in short supply. The government allows companies to hire foreigners with skills or experience in those areas.
