This is a sensitive and important topic that affects a lot of immigrants. I am not an expert, but I can share my experience and what I have learnt. Discrimination can take many forms in the UK. It can be racial, religious, sexual about weight, attractiveness, education, socio-economic …the list goes on. As a person of colour living in small Northern towns. I learnt that most of it was due to ignorance. People had pre-conceived views about different nationals, races, religions etc. This was usually due to the fear of the unknown, a lack of exposure. The solution whenever I felt that someone had an unfair bias towards me because I was a foreigner was to be myself by respecting and treating everyone as I wanted to be treated. Having conversations with the perpetrators often worked as they soon realised that their views about me were baseless. On most occasions the perpetrator was unaware of their actions. Getting to know them and them knowing me almost always helped to stop the discrimination.
